Roberts’ weak welfarism theorem: a minor correction

چکیده

Abstract Roberts’ “weak neutrality” or welfarism” theorem concerns Sen social welfare functionals which are defined on an unrestricted domain of utility function profiles and satisfy independence irrelevant alternatives, the Pareto condition, a form weak continuity. Roberts (Rev Econ Stud 47(2):421–439, 1980) claimed that induced ordering states has one-way representation by continuous, monotonic real-valued Euclidean space interpersonal vectors—that is, increase in this is sufficient, but may not be necessary, for strict preference. A counter-example shows continuity insufficient; minor strengthening to pairwise proposed instead its sufficiency demonstrated.

Roberts’ Weak Welfarism Theorem: A Minor Correction

All notation and definitions are taken from Roberts (1980). Let f denote a social welfare functional (SWFL) mapping the domain U of utility function profiles into social preference orderings on a given set X of at least three social states. An important result in social choice theory with interpersonal comparisons is the “strong neutrality” or “welfarism” result due to d’Aspremont and Gevers (1...

A Modular Approach to Roberts' Theorem

Roberts’ theorem from 1979 states that the only incentive compatible mechanisms over a full domain and range of at least 3 are weighted variants of the VCG mechanism termed affine maximizers. Roberts’ proof is somewhat ”magical” and we provide a new ”modular” proof. We hope that this proof will help in future efforts to extend the theorem to non-full domains such as combinatorial auctions or sc...

Welfarism vs. extra-welfarism.

'Extra-welfarism' has received some attention in health economics, yet there is little consensus on what distinguishes it from more conventional 'welfarist economics'. In this paper, we seek to identify the characteristics of each in order to make a systematic comparison of the ways in which they evaluate alternative social states. The focus, though this is not intended to be exclusive, is on h...

Multi_profile welfarism: a generalization

This paper characterizes welfarist social evaluation in a multi-profile setting where, in addition to multiple utility profiles, there may be more than one profile of nonwelfare information. We prove a new version of the welfarism theorem in this alternative framework, and we demonstrate that adding a plausible and weak anonymity property to the welfarism axioms generates welfarist social-evalu...

Two simplified proofs for Roberts' theorem

Roberts (1979) showed that every social choice function that is ex-post implementable in private value settings must be weighted VCG, i.e. it maximizes the weighted social welfare. This paper provides two simplified proofs for this. The first proof uses the same underlying key-point, but significantly simplifies the technical construction around it, thus helps to shed light on it. The second pr...
